Parent of a middle schooler here. I won't have the money to go on college tours so do colleges put a negative next to your child's name if they don't visit the campus before applying. It seems to make more sense to save my limited funds to visit the schools he does get accepted to.

Also, LOL about not living off campus. In one of the most expensive cities in the country.

I guess if you hail from Ashburn or the like, you find historic Cambridge "dingy."

She also doesn't understand the "Houses" and why you affiliate with a House after your freshman year.

curious about where you've been and what your initial impressions were. We just spent a week in Boston with tons of other families from NOVA. My DC has seen close to 10 kids she knows. We liked Boston so much better than I expected, and frankly, more than I wanted to. We found BU and Northeastern's urban campuses to not be so awful. Both gave off a more safe, clean vibe than Harvard. We were surprised to find Cambridge more dingy. While Harvard seemed proud that close to 90% of students live on campus all 4 years, my kids joked that it's probably because they don't feel safe living off-campus. Tufts made a strong showing this week with its smaller campus and mix of LA and science. My DC is interested in engineering and math, btw.
