Not disrespectful, but...they are not fans. They know that we've been planning for her first communion.

I would express my displeasure. They had to know this was not acceptable.
(I'm not Catholic, but my mother is. We all have to be respectful of others' beliefs.)

I'm Catholic and we are raising our kids Catholic and this isn't something that would bother me. As far as catholic teachings go it doesn't count, and I think it is important to learn about all religions.

To you, but understand that it doesn't mean the same thing to them. It's quite likely that they didn't understand what it means to you.

Your daughter will still undergo preparation, and make her first Holy communion, and it will be her first because what she experienced in the Methodist church was totally different.

Your annoyance is fully justified. This one might not "count" in the eyes of the Catholic church, but it counts for your child. How old is she? How will she understand that this communion isn't like her First Communion?

Had you made it clear to the ILs before that day that First Communion is a big deal for you and you don't want her to receive communion before that? Do so now, in case they take her to their church again.

If she took communion in the Methodist church, it absolutely did not qualify as communion in the Catholic church.

What denomination are you?

Different denominations feel differently about how communion starts. In my church, children take communion alongside adults from the time they are tiny. There's not thought of "first" communion. It's not an event that is marked in any way. It just kind of happens when your kid is old enough that they're expressing interest in it, maybe around 2/

On the other hand, in Catholicism "first communion" is a big deal, and kids make special preparation for it. Taking someone's kid for communion when they haven't been through the preparation for the first communion would be considered wrong in the Catholic faith.

My daughter spend the day with my in-laws last Sunday. I found out they:

1. Took her to their church
2. Had her take communion.

I'm really bothered by this. IF and when we decided for my daughter to have her first communion - Shouldnt that be something for us to do as a family?
