My 4th grade HGC kid has not had too much homework but she does feel much more stressed than she did at the home school.

IDK, my HGC kid is almost never stressed or have too much HW. DC is by no means a genius. I keep asking DC why they hardly have any HW. They have projects, but DC usually finishes them in a couple of days. DC is in compacted math, too, and there have been only a handful of math HW that took DC longer than 10min. to do. DC spends most of the time playing computer games after school.
But, there was way more HW in 4th than 5th in HGC.

I posted in another thread, but we have found the 4th curriculum to be much more amenable to enrichment than previous years' curricula. I was also nervous because all my child's peer group went to the HGC. (My child sort of tanked the rest because she wasn't feeling well that day and I didn't realize it was the rest day). Compacted math helps a lot to keep the day moving, and the social studies and science curricula are way better than previous years. Our teacher had also given our kid some extra assignments to work on in her areas of interest. I'm a little concerned about the social stuff, because she's one of the geeky nerd girls, and a lot of them left for HGC, but we're managing.

This is what I find interesting about this whole thing. The difference between many of the kids who get in and those who don't (including OP's) is probably 5 to 10 questions on this test. This test isn't an IQ test, and it isn't an aptitude test. How can you possibly know that an 8 year old kid who gets 8 fewer questions correct on this test on one day in time isn't gifted but the other kids are? That's silly.
OP just stay involved and supplement outside of school and your DC will be fine.

You'll just need to advocate for your child to be placed in a sufficiently challenging reading group, OP. Make sure you speak to her teacher at the beginning of 4th. It will be fine.

There are lots of kids who would succeed at a HGC who go to their home schools and do just fine. Your child will not be the only one in this situation. I have a friend whose daughter went to a HGC for a year and then returned to her home school the next year because she missed her friends. That child is brilliant and the school accommodated her. What choice do you have, anyway, other than private school? No sense in worrying too much about it.

But it's really tangential to the other discussions. My DC was not admitted to the HGC (cluster is Pinecrest/Oakview). DC scored well above median for V, right below for Qualitative, and 14 pts below median for NV. Anyway my question; is anyone else worried about the situation now at the home school? I think DC will get into compacted math. But, DC's real strength is verbal. It looks like at least 6 kids from our home school got in, and three of them are from DC's small-ish William and Mary reading group. Now I'm concerned she'll be left without too many peers (not none, but maybe not enough to make it worth their while to differentiate).
I don't' even know how many kids total got in, but every time I hear my kid tell me another child in the reading group got in I feel a little worse about the whole thing. I just want my kid to have a peer group at the school and still be challenged at the home school. Anyone else had this situation can weigh in on how 4th (and 5th) grade went?
