TJ kids go to UVA and study the humanities. Your kid will probably leapfrog over them in math.

New poster here - we're zoned for an IB HS. My 2nd grader really struggles with writing. I know. I know. It's 2nd grade she can improve, but I'm concerned. If a child is a mediocre writer, will they fall apart in IB? How strong a writer does one need to be to be in IB or does IB help train you to be a better writer?

This is all about how FCPS chose to implement IB-- by putting it in the lowest performing, lowest SES schools, and not about the merits or difficulty of IB vs AP math. AP math doesn't lead to high math SAT/NMSF. High SES schools would do better on these measures whether they were AP or IB. Besides, neither SAT nor PSAT math scores are based on AP or IB level math. It's not like there is Calculus or even pre- Calc on the SAT, FFS. I don't have a strong AP vs IB preference, but come on.

OP, yes, but it is challenging to get all the science in that your kid might want with all the IB requirements. I note that WL doesn't have HL physics. That's a limitation.

TJ is not the be all and end all in STEM education in this area. IB (and even AP) will be plenty challenging for the motivated, interested student.

OP, in answer to your question, I hope so! We have a TJ semifinalist. His TJ fallback plan is to get an IB diploma, and he has already filled out the paperwork to pupil place into one of the "good" IB schools. He would do full IB diploma and he, and we, believe that if he takes IB HL Math in 11th, plus the multivariable class in 12th and 2 HL sciences, plus the other diploma class work, he'll get a great education. He is also strong in humanities and likes to write, so this is a good option for him.

I have a child in the IB HL sequence, who did 7th grade Algebra I, 8th grade geometry. Like the AP students on this track, DC will take IB HL Math in 11th, instead of AP Calculus BC, and the exact same linear/multivariable class that his AP counterparts take.

IB HL Math is supposed to be the equivalent of Calc BC, IB SL math is the equivalent of Calc AB, and then there is IB math studies, which is a lower level. DH was an undergrad math major and has really looked at the AP vs IB math curriculum. He believes that the IB HL math is more robust than AP Calc-- that it requires really using the math and writing about it at greater depth than AP. That's not to say it's harder (or easier)-- you end up in the same place. Just that IB digs deeper.

HL math students are usually taking at least Geometry in 8th grade but either level math is outstanding in the IB program. DS was in IB and even though he did not take AP math he did take AP math exam and had not trouble with it. The IB exam was more challenging but he did well in all areas.
