Cost is important but you need to understand which units/brands you want to get. Not too many units are made in US any longer. Most of them are from Mexico/oversea countries. Quality is not the same as old US made brands. Look at Trane brand.

Just call 3 companies to come out to give you a quote. They do this all the time and rarely give you the hard sell. They know they are competing against other companies and don't want to waste their time any more than you want to waste yours.

OP, there are calculators online where you can calculate the size of your home by volume to figure out the size of AC unit you need.

Then you can go online and price units based on how many tons the calculators recommend. HVAC sizing uses a very set formula because if it is too small or too big it will not be energy efficient.

Pricing this way won't give you the entire picture, but it will give you a starting point of what to expect before labor gets added into your cost.

You can't compare your size home to their size home cost wise.

4-7k. Depends if you are replacing interior and exterior units. Size of house. Quality of brand. Incentives. Etc.

At our old townhouse which was 1200 sf, we paid $5600 for new AC unit and furnace.

We bought 2 new units in the past few years - one for our rental and one for our own residence. These prices included removal of old equipment and installation of new.

Gas furnace/ outside condensing A/C , minimum efficiency 1200sf - $6,000

Gas furnace/ outside condensing AC, high efficiency - 1900 sf - $7,300. We got a Pepco rebate for this unit because we bought equipment of a higher SEER rating and efficiency. Not sure if Pepco still offers it.

We were quoted (for a house sized 2,500 sq ft) around $4,000-$7000 for the unit, plus installation.

The thing to look for is cost where you have to conform to new standards. We would have to pay an extra $1000-2000 to have the pipes fully insulated outside and inside the wall.

We have 1000 square foot house with a basement (heated/cooled). I think it was a 2.5 ton but forget. We got ranges from $9,000 (crappy unit) to $22,000.

It's really going to be hard to compare because every HVAC system is different.

You are going to have to get quotes, OP. Just call a lot of companies, make them compete for your business. Do it now, during their slow season before the summer. You'll get better pricing.
