DC with ADHD and moderate-servere anxiety. Not eligible for 504 or IEP because of being "on grade level" and high test scores despite behaviors like running away and hiding when anxious. In MCPS.

A 504 plan just provides accommodations. In MCPS, a child has to be able to advocate to receive these accommodations.

If anxiety is a barrier to self advocacy for accommodations or if you are seeking for your child to learn skills to independently manage anxiety then you need to request in writing to be evaluated for Special Education Services. If Special Education Services are needed, then the team writes and IEP.

My son has an IEP for anxiety. He is classified as OHI. His anxiety had physical manifestations and without services and accommodations he failed everything. So his situation was extreme. But I also know others who have IEPs for anxiety in both MCPS and Fairfax County n

My child is allowed to leave the classroom at any time and go to a designated place to collect herself. We touch base frequently with her teacher to determine the length of time she can take on her breaks. (We try to keep it as short as possible, but it depends on how things are going for her that week.)

Extra time for assignments and testing, separate location for testing, teachers checking that assignments are written down, flash pass to see guidance counselor. (This is middle school MCPS).

Your child can get a 504 if they have a diagnosed anxiety disorder, or if the anxiety is the direct result of another disability.

I've got 2 kids with ADHD/anxiety/LDs. Their IEPs include behavioral goals related to their anxiety - mainly learning to manage their anxiety. They also get related services including counseling with the school counselor.

This may be a ridiculous question, but I truly don't know the answer. If a student has anxiety in public school, can he get support or an IEP? or info. written on a 504 plan? Our son has adhd, but he is now experiencing some anxious feelings. do public schools offer support with that or o we need to look at private schools? Thanks for your help!
