If there was a bad, pronounced smell I would toss it.

I realize that I'm late, but I just encountered this yesterday. I usually love turkey brothers but this meat smelled so strong that I ended up taking 2 bites, spitting one of them out, and then throwing the burgers away. It was repulsive

For some reason, I loathe the smell and taste of ground turkey. Even stronger than usual smelling? I'd run screaming.

Dramatics aside, it is known for a higher rate of bacteria than other meats.

Smell is more accurate than date stamps... either way.

I often use meat past expiry date as long as it smells fine.

But if it smells off, toss it.

I toss it if the smell is strong bc it grosses me out and I'm paranoid. Just FYI, oftentimes organic has a more gamey smell than non-organic. I find even if the expiration date hasn't arrived yet, I have to toss after 4 days max in the fridge if it comes from whole foods.

Literally, this just happened to us tonight--which is why I am looking for other incidents. My husband cooked the ground turkey and I could smell it upstairs...it reeked! I've never smelled it this way before. It smelled VERY FLESHY...He put it over in the lasagna and we could smell it after it was done. Unfortunately, we gave to the kids before we actually confirmed the smell was still resonating from the dish and not the pans used to brown the meat. I then had to eat it to make sure I would experience symptoms --if they occurred. We shall see... I wonder why the irony of this happening in the same month.

Weird -- this happened to us two weeks ago. I made the same lettuce wraps with ground turkey we have often but the meat seemed so off we just threw it out. We chickened out of eating it right before we started in on the finished wraps. Something was just strange about the not expired, non-frozen ground turkey.

Was it frozen? If so, maybe not fully thawed?

The expiration wasn't for a few more days. It didn't necessarily smell bad - it wasn't a rotten or suffer smell but was just really, really strong turkey or poultry smell. It made the house stink like it when I was browning it so badly I was afraid it wasn't good to eat. Dh said I was crazy. We did end up throwing it out because I was so repulsed but wondering if others would do the same? I use a lot of ground turkey for spaghetti and it has never smelled like that.
