And if it is forsythia, does it look heavily pruned? Because you have to prune it immediately after bloom. Any later and you lose the next year's blooms.

In a new house, I like to live with the garden for a year and take photos and notes. Once you really know what you have, then start to plan changes.

I wouldn't assume anything is dead until mid-April and there's no activity.

A lot of yellow flowers, some half-open only.

We moved into a new house in late November. There are two stalky bushes on each side of the front steps that look like they might be forsythia, but I'm not sure. They currently don't have a single leaf or bud on them, just look like tall sticks. If they are forsythia, are they dead? Or what else might they be?
