On our tour they said to expect an hour a night. Yikes! In third grade!

I've never heard of anyone in LS having that much. Usually 30 mins. or so.

I think it really depends on the child and how long they take to complete assignments. In lower school at SR, I had parents tell me their children had hours of homework while my DD in the same class had 30-45 or less many days. My daughter is now in middle school at SR and it's the same story. I run into parents who say "wow, they've had a stressful week with all of those tests/assignments" and I haven't noticed my child being stressed at all. She's a strong student and seems to be able to get the work done with no issues so I take my cues from her and assume all is well. Now, other kids might be perfectionists and always trying for the A+ instead of the A or A-, and that might be the difference between how many hours it takes to get things done. It all really depends on your child and what they want in terms of grades as well as how easy school is for them. Probably the same in most places.

Wow! I am surprised! Our parish school has way more than an hour per night in lower school.

No not even close. An hour would be a heavy night

Not at all actually. Very light, at least for my DD.

I've heard it can be 2-3 hours a night in lower school. Is that right?
