We have 3 accept for HS, one reject, and one WL. We are trying to decide between two of the accepts but need to go to accepted students day for each of the two. Should we quickly decline the third? Second should we take ourselves of off the waiting list?

We got one reject and 2 wait lists. You are incredibly lucky to have a choice. Be polite but do so quickly so the school can offer the place to a family who is still hoping and waiting.

Some of the enrollment contracts have a space to click towards the bottom if you are choosing to decline the offer. I just did this last night. Check that box so they have the declined offer officially back. Then send a polite email to the admissions person that you worked with the most saying that you appreciate their time and consideration, but your child has found another school that they felt was a better fit. They will reply asking where your child is going so they have it for their records.

Send a nice letter or a note that can go in your file...just in case you need to go back to them in the future.

+1. That's an expensive way to feed indecision. I don't understand what you would learn in 3 more months.

Anyway, there's no need to overwork it. Be polite and to the point. Just like the rejection letters the schools send to you (or others).

I second the "quickly" above. If you are certain that one school is your first choice and you have another school (or more) waiting on your reply then tell them as soon as you can. There are many families hoping for spots, including us! I had a friend tell me yesterday that she kept multiple schools on the hook with deposits in past years until June 1 and I couldn't believe it. She said she just wanted all the time she needed to decide but I found it very selfish. I'm not suggesting you plan to do this of course - it would definitely burn a bridge with the schools you end up declining.

Seriously, I think it depends on your feelings about the school. If you had negative experiences during the process and these made you decide you want nothing to do with the school, let them know (politely). If you thought the school was wonderful but made the decision for geography reasons, say so. If you find this a hard decision and want to leave open the possibility of reapplying in the future, let them know what a tough decision it is and say that you are not sure you are making the right one, and be very, very nice.
