I think we've done about 10 beach vacations between both sides of our family and we've always split it by family- usually ends up being in thirds between us, a sibling and their wife and kids, and parents. FWIW, we make the least out of any of our siblings and I would feel incredibly awkward if we were expected to pay less because of that.

If you can't pay for the whole thing yourself and instead are reduced to asking a series of tacky questions, u cant afford to do this.

We do it per bedroom for rental cost. If 2 or more families decide to get extra rooms for kids - we split cost of those extra rooms per families sharing, regardless of the numbers of children. Eg I have 2, sister - 1, but we both agree to get extra room for them to share, we split cost 50/50. Just to clarify - I would get extra room for my kids even if sisters kid is not present, so I'm ready to pay for that extra bedroom 100%.

When we did this, we split it proportionally by the number of bedrooms each group was using. I don't see why a family with 3 kids using a total of two rooms (i.e. one room for the kids and one for the adults) should pay more than a family with 2 kids (still using one bedroom for the kids and one for the adults).

Per bedroom makes the most sense.
I don't think the parents who choose to sleep in one room with the kid should pay more than a single person with their own room.

If the sibling can, I think it is nice to pay for the grandparents. Especially if the trip would be a financial burden.

If kids from different parents share a room then the cost of the room is split per child. 3 kids, from 3 different families, 1/3 each. 3 kids from 2 families on pay 1/3 and the other 2/3. People know what is fair. Some people just want to be cheap as the expense of others.

What about if there is also a bedroom for the kids, but only the older kids will be using it and the parent of some of those older kids is also the single adult who wants to pay half as much as other families because she advocates paying per adult only instead of per bedroom? (BTW, this single parent is in a better financial position than the other two parent families)

Not an issue in our case, but I would discount maybe 75%, if others are willing.

I got burned when SIL never coughed up her family's share. Will never split the cost of anything with family again.

I would do it by room and only take income differences into account if 1) the richer people are pushing for a more expensive rental or location, or 2) the differences are pronounced enough that it's obvious it would be a burden on the poorer people. In that case the people with money to burn should help out the single parent sibling or whatever.

What’s the fairest way to do this? Split the cost per bedroom? Or per person? If per person, is that just adults or adults and children? At what age does a child count as an extra cost, if at all? What if the child is sharing a room with parents? What if one sibling is single or a single parent? Do siblings pay for the grandparents or do they pay their own way? Do income differences get taken into account?
