No freaking out. We are happy with the PK program at our kid's daycare, so if we don't get in somewhere we want, we'll just try again or move next year. Frankly, I don't even think preschool matters that much for kids with educated parents, who read to them and talk to them and take them to museums, etc.

And you don't have to move to the suburbs, just to a neighborhood with an IB school you like better.

We had terrible luck in PK3 and PK4, then got our #1 choice in K. It *does* happen, just might take a few tries. I kept the faith and you should too! Though I admit the weeks efore he K results I'd started browsing Moco real estate listings and feeling despair....


NP here - Were you ever worried your #1 would disappoint? I think that's my bigger fear. What is the 1 or 2 schools we've been wanting don't work out, then we have to switch yet again.

Even my IB with single digit proficiency rates is great for ECE.

Good luck - I think angst at the middle school level is a lot more understandable and appropriate than for PK3 or 4 (fewer options, better sense of what will/won't work for your kid). But it's been a long time since I was parenting a preschooler.

We struck out our first year of the lottery, but we had a back up plan so there was never a need to freak out. If your financial plan depends on winning the lottery, there are some schools that never fill -- it's just that those schools are typically not discussed on DCUM.

You know, we freaked out last year, struck out for PK3 (well, we eventually got off AppleTree Columbia Heights waitlist), and ended up leaving our nanny share for a wonderful preschool. We were suprised how much DS loves going there, and he's learning a lot. We'll move if we keep strike out. Freaking out does no good.

The level of calm here is stunning. Is anyone's life plan teetering on a slobbering 2.5 year-old's chance of becoming one of X students in a certain class? Or is there a sense that STUFF. WILL. WORK. OUT. ??
