Yeah, but single male? You only live once, so it might as well be in the city itself.

Actually I am totally okay with not living in the city as I will be working a lot. And I should add that I am married, with kids. My family will be joining me in SF after the school year is over at which point we will be looking for a "family friendly" rental.

So you'll need a short-term rental? I'd look for a room in that case.

If you haven't lived out there it might not occur to you to check the earthquake maps before deciding in a neighborhood, but it is something to consider. I personally would avoid the marina because it's one of the areas where soil liquefaction occurs. Also it has a gross vibe to me.

That's nearly a year old. Rent has been skyrocketing. My main advice is if you see something you like, grab it quickly. Good rentals go quickly. Tons of techies and hipsters are looking for cheap, small spaces in good neighborhoods, so someone's going to get it. SOMA is getting better to live in. Really, SF is a reasonably low crime place. Most of the crimes are car break ins. You're planning on public transit, so you could be totally car free. Maybe use a car share if you have to drive occasionally. But if you remove the car, you free yourself from the parking and a lot of the crime concerns. Anything near GGP would be awesome too. Lots of families, GGP is awesome, great place to live.

Single male. Job will be in the area of the Financial District/SoMa. Looking for a rental for now. Someplace near public transportation - prefer Muni but will do Bart + Muni if necessary. Budget is under $3K per month - does not need more than a studio.

Ideas??
