In some states, you can anonymously tip off the dmv. In some states, doctors can do it. Let's not pretend that eyesight and reflexes never deteriorate as we age. Until self driving cars are available, it's about the other drivers and pedestrians out there.

My parents are 66 & 67, and still perfectly capable of driving. I absolutely trust them with DS in the car.

FIL is 69 and a good driver--car, pickup, riding mower, and Harley--but lives far away, so it never comes up. MIL is also 69, and health concerns have kept her from driving for years.

FWIW, one of my grandmothers never learned to drive. My grandpa shuttled her around until he died when he was 78. We took away my other grandmother's license when she was in her mid-70s.

10:23 again. When my folks moved to a senior living community we made sure they were without their car initially (it was back at their original home "for the winter") They got use to not having it. One month turned into several. They talked about driving ("maybe we'll drive to Florida next winter" REALLY?!!!) But day to day they didn' t ask to actually drive that day. When it occurred they might impulsively get someone other than immediate family to bring them their car, my brother disconnected the car battery. Years later we were able to convince them to sell it. But ant time before, they had said "no".

70 is not old. Both of my parents and in laws still drive - mid-70s.

Yeah. A few of them are running for president. Since when is 70 too old to drive?

It's hard to predict how an elder will react when you discuss them not driving. I've heard of some - not prompted - handing over the keys knowing it's time. For myself, I had "the talk" with my parents, at the end asked for their keys and was given an emphatic, "no".

70 isn't that old, it really depends on the person's health and individual circumstances. I know an 84 and a 93 year old who are both still driving, but only during the day. They are both still in good health and their eyesight is good.

Inlaws are just 70 and drive. They don't do long hw trips anymore and mil doesn do highways at all. Thankfully they are local and can get everywhere on local roads even if it takes longer. For an out of state trip to see family DH went with them and drove.

My dad is 65 and still drives, and he's fine.

My grandma, however, is 90, and she should NOT be driving. I don't live near her, so I don't know what to do about it.

My mother stopped driving at 40 because her MS got so bad she hit a pedestrian. My dad, on the other hand, drove himself to hospice. I considered it a major win when I got him to stop riding a motorcycle 5 years before he died.

Good luck OP! Some people do not want to give up their independence.

My Dad will 78 in 3 months and not only does he drive, he still does all the repairs and maintenance on his car. It flips me out a little that he still crawls under his jacked up car to change the oil. My mother is a year younger and stopped driving 7 years ago due to mobility issues. We pretty much took away her keys because she kept getting into fender benders.

I wouldn't let any of them drive my kids, but yes they all still drive. They are all 70-67. My grandmother drive until she was 90. Scary stuff.

Have you been out with him driving lately? How was it?

My dad is 70 and still wants to drive but his eyesight and dexterity is getting bad. I do not know what to do.
