These are very different schools. Auburn wants kids who are at least at grade level whose main issue is social cognition. Their curriculum incorporates social skills. Auburn will not be a good school for someone whose main issue is learning disabilities needing remediation.

Auburn and Ivymount MAP are similar.

Please no snark on Special Needs. We're all here to help one another. I have an ASD child and wish I had found this forum years ago. From Commonwealth's mission statement: "Commonwealth Academy is a welcoming school where many different kinds of learners can succeed. Average to gifted students who require the individual attention available only in very small class sizes, as well as students who have been diagnosed with a specific learning disability (LD) and/or with AD/HD will find an environment that celebrates their unique talents and supports their areas of need". Just call the schools you are interested in and ask. I have found all admissions officers to be very friendly and forthcoming. It doesn't serve the school well if they accept a child that cannot succeed in that school's environment and only the school admissions officer can size that up.

There is a Commonwealth booster on here who is very adamant that Commonwealth does not take any non-college bound kids, kids with ASD, kids with emotional or behavioral or mental health issues, public placements etc etc.

I think it's one poster who seems to have a particularly negative view of what ASD is. We were accepted to commonwealth after being very upfront about my DC's ASD diagnosis (we didn't attend because we couldn't make the logistics work). I know at least one other kid with ASD who goes to Commonwealth.

Last year we met an amazing young man who was transitioning back to MCPS. You may want to see if the school would ask him or his his parents to talk to you. They are pretty open about this sort of thing as I understand it.

We are applying to the Auburn School (Silver Spring campus) for our 7 y.o. child. Could parents who have had kids there tell us which schools/school systems their kids have transitioned to after finishing at Auburn?
