We had a fabulous time last summer at Hershey. Stay at the Hershey Hotel.

Op here: ok I should have mentioned we have about $2500 budget. Wow some of those places look amazing, and jealous of those who can afford a $7k+ vacation. Unfortunately that is not us!

Also love Maine. We stayed in Portland at just a HoJo, but there are tons of resorts too.

Woodloch Pines - three meals a day, no cooking or cleaning for me, activities morning until night if you want or just relax at the lake or pool.

depends what you like. I like a beach vacation - relaxing, days at pool and beach, then dinners out or mini golf or whatever. I'm partial to Sandbridge or the OBX. We spent one summer vacay at Nemocolin- more to do, less relaxing, so you have to pick. My kids liked zip lining and the animals and more planned activities, I prefer more relaxing.

We have done a week in NY, but again, not relaxing - we did sightseeing and shopping and running around, also fun, but different. This year we are going out west for national parks as the kids are older ad more adventurous.

I was about to say Japan, but then realized you were asking for driveable.
But it really was our best vacation ever!

I suggest a road trip with national parks and historic landmarks.

OP here: thanks for the ideas so far. Looking for specifics rather than simply destinations (i.e., specific resorts with activities). Thinking of Sea Colony but not sure we want the crowds.

I've done Acadia, Niagara Falls and Williamsburg with mine and all were great. You might want to try a lodge in a campground for fun. It's not exactly camping, but you can build a fire and have the amenities of camping without the work.

Driving distance? Acadia/Bar Harbor in Maine.

Flying distance? Hawaii.

Anywhere with a river or a pool.
