We were there at Nags Head the end of August once and it wasn't bad at all. When we drove up to Corolla, we like how peaceful and calmer the water was. Little did I know. Is traffic like the rush hour here in the DC area?

Corolla is 32 miles away from Nags Head. In the summer there is typical beach traffic. The nightmare is trying to get to and from Corolla on check in/ check out days- do you day trips during the week and stay put Saturday and Sundays and it won't be too bad.

Oh man, why didn't I read all these Outerbanks traffic issues before I book the house. I'm almost regretting this. I can just hear the relatives complaining complaining.
Than, WHY WHY do so many people like the Outerbanks!

I'm wondering if OP realizes how much time it takes to get places from Corolla during the summer. My boss has a beach house that they use as a vacation home near Kill Devil Hills. When his son was in college, he lived in OBX and worked construction. Even leaving before 6 AM, it was a lot of traffic and a long ride from KDH to Corolla.

But, OP, I'd highly recommend Currituck Lighthouse, as someone else has already suggested.

Jocky's Ridge (although it could be a nightmare traffic-wise getting from Corolla down there)
Wild horse tour
Rent a party boat and do a sunset tour on the sound
The nature center next to the Walehead Club
Mini golf
Go-carting in Timbuck II

We really liked Jockey Ridge. Take kites with you to fly.

I also wanted to do the wild horse tour down that way, but the weather didn't cooperate.

It's been a few years since I've been, but Corolla has a few small things to do, like minigolf and go carts. Jockeys Ridge/Wright Mem'l is kind of cool but not a must do and don't underestimate the time and annoyance of driving places.

We're going to the Corolla, Outerbanks in the summer. Any recommendations for places to visit. We have kids between 6-10.
Any hidden gems you found when you were there? Any must see/do for that age range? Anywhere/thing that made your kids go, that's cool fun.
We don't mind driving down to Nags Head. Thank you.
