Under 35 with no risk factors. Was told it would be $795 out of pocket because not covered by Carefirst, but finally got the bill and it was $140. Sequenom labs.

I have Cigna insurance and am over 35. The entire cost was covered. We got two separate EOBs for the procedure--one around $550 and one around $600, leading me to believe that the bill was around $1,200, though it could have been even higher because I know insurance companies often make deals/discounts with providers of tests.

We could have found out the gender from this test but chose not to. We just wanted to know if the baby was genetically low-risk or not (it was, thankfully!)

Yes, I had Verifi, it was covered by insurance (BCBS Fed Basic), I was 30. I was a little unclear on it, because it ended up being covered 100%, but at the time my OB's office (CWC Alexandria) said they had negotiated some kind of rate with Verifi where it would be $99. But I am about 99% sure I never paid anything for it so who knows.

I did genetic testing at 8 weeks (my genetic background / risk factors, not the babies).

My physicians office told me they weren't sure if insurance didn't cover it, but thought it ran at a few hundred dollars.

I got the bill at at was $1494! I'm on a high deductible plan and haven't met this year's deductible yet.

It was the Counsyl test. I read online that others saw that bill level billed to insurance, but that when it finally got resolved / billed to them it was only $99. I haven't called yet to negotiate. Still in shock!

I did the test last fall, got the bill in the mail, called them and they adjusted it down to $99 as promised.

I wanted to do this, but my OB wouldn't do the bloodwork for the test even. I would have been charged for that.

You have to call your insurance company to be sure -- all are different. If you're over 35 good insurance covers it. Mine included the gender (sex).

If you are referring to the NIPT, it's looking at trisomy/chromosomal abnormalities, not other hereditary genetic diseases. NIPT or cell free DNA tests are done when there is a risk factor like AMA, trisomy history, or other findings in ultrasound or NT screens. Insurance will generally cover it in this event.

Mine was covered 100%. I had MaterniT21 based on my insurance, and they will knock off the majority of the bill if insurance doesn't cover it when one of the risk factors are present.

My BCBS did, at 32 - I believe (all, most) Anthem BCBS's now have a policy that cover the tests regardless of mother's age. See here: https://www.anthem.com/medicalpolicies/policies/mp_pw_c150729.htm

If yours does not, sometimes there are other risk factors that would qualify you for coverage - the genetic counselor who goes over things with you should be able to detail them though I don't know if they'll always align with insurance (we had a prior heart defect and delays which was enough for the counselor but I'm not sure would have covered it for insurance, prior pregnancy or loss with chromosomal issue would be another, etc). Or you can google to try to find your insurance's policy, like the above.

See for example UHC's policy - which lists worrisome ultrasound findings, history of trisomy pregnancy, positive screen or known parental genetic results:

Thanks PPs. I take it high risk refers exclusively to 35+ moms and not moms with previous complications? Or am I wrong on that.

I have CIGNA, it covers it any of the free cell tests so long as you are 35+ at delivery; however, all of the labs for all of the available tests (i.e. verifi, harmony, maternit21) are out of network. If I had time and energy, I would fight them on a network insufficiency appeal, but I don't.

CIGNA was billed $595 by Progenity for the Verifi test, of which CIGNA considers $200 to be a reasonable charge. $200 is the amount of my out of network deductible, and Progenity adjusted their bill down to $200, as they agree to accept the insurance company's determination of reasonableness for out of network patients.

I got gender info.

Kaiser Mine did not because I'm under 35.

Or did you pay out of pocket? What was the total cost? Was the gender info covered in that? Thanks for the info!
