I went way overboard and did gift bags with all kinds of goodies. I envy the moms who did a single card and nothing else - I do not feel superior at all. It's clear I have issues that I am expressing by turning V-day into a mommy competition (my kid didn't even get to touch the Valentines - I did it all except for the signing part). Keep it simple, mom. We need people like you to bring back the sanity.

I was intimidated by the crafty valentines in preschool, but the K valentines were much less elaborate. Our store-bought valentines fit right in.

Does this go on in the title 1 schools? My kid is slated to go to one of the must maligned ( here on DCUM) APS elementaries. I'm wondering if they will even do Valentines? Anybody got kids at Barcroft, Randolph, carlin springs, or Abingdon? Anybody know what to expect?
Ps- I loved making and giving valentines as a kid. Now, I'm one of those moms looking for ideas on Pinterest. Can't help it. I love this crap.

It's not just Valentine's Day. Multiple pumpkins is now the norm for Halloween (as are catalogs full of expensive decorations and costumes), and people go farther every year in decorating their houses for Christmas. Kids get full-on expensive gifts in Easter baskets.

Reminds me of when DD was in K. The first (Sept) birthday girl's mother sent in goody bags for everyone! That set the bar pretty high for the others. Fortunately, DD's bday was in December--but by May the goody bags were incredible! Insane. If DD's bday was in Sept it would never have occurred to me to send in goody bags.

We are also in APS, and my kid got some candy but mostly store bought it very simple homemade cards (eg, the kid cut a heart out of construction paper and signed it). Nothing fancy.

Not in APS but we got some very creative cards, too. One was a photo card like you'd send for the holidays, and another was a candy robot built from conversation hearts, starbursts and smarties.

Thank heavens. I did send in the TMNT drugstore ones with the pencils, so I hope I won
My son did get a few very elaborate ones, but I just don't have the energy to be intimidated by that.

A crafty mom introduced me to Pinterest last year. I had no idea.
Then, one weekend, I made about 25 "busy bags" for an airplane trip. It was weird, like I got addicted to it. Clearly that phase is over. I was just shocked by the V-day creativity. I'm not crafty or creative. I did pull one of them out so that I could get my husband to copy it next year. He is creative and crafty. And likes little special projects. Thank goodness.
