My mother's Aunt became her step-sister when her mother married her Aunt's father. Aunt was married to mother's youngest brother.

That's the way it is in our family. My daughter is closest to her first cousins' children, who she calls her cousins. They are older than her by a couple of years, but her actual cousins are in our generation. Incidentally I became a great aunt when I got married! DH's oldest brother is over twenty years older than him, so he attended his wedding as a toddler. I think it's fun.

My aunt is 4.5 years older than me; one year older than my brother. We're more like siblings than aunt and niece/nephew.

It isn't that weird. In large families the generations tend to blur and overlap just because of normal variation in life choices. Let's say a family has 4 kids and the oldest is 10 years older than the youngest. Then the oldest child becomes a parent at age 25, while the youngest has a child when he is 40. That gives you a 25-year age gap between the grandkids. Repeat that over another generation and there you are.

Very common with large families. I am older than my uncle. There are actually 4 nieces/nephews older than the last 3 aunts/uncles. My mom is one of 10 and my FIL is one of 10 as well.

It is also becoming common with second marriages and subsequent families.

I just realized my dad has great grandkids that are older than some of his grandchildren. I think its pretty interesting, but maybe its more common than I think.
