It is not toe nail fungus. I've lost several toe nails from running or hiking. As someone else said, be grateful you already had new nail underneath when it came off.

You said you took off your boots and it was hanging. I'd assume you have some friction thought the day with a hard shoe such as a boot. Losing a pinky nail isn't uncommon.

Or an injury.

OP stated very clearly there was no injury.

Happens to me a lot, too. God, if only this could happen with my teeth.

Just be glad there was a nail underneath.

Happens to me all the time. I'm a runner, and the constant impact of my toenails against my shoes causes them to fall off. It doesn't hurt. Most runners have similar stories.

My big toe was injured almost 10 years ago and has been in a constant cycle of new growing toenail under old dead toenail since then. Hopefully yours is all healed up now and will return to normal.

But there was no injury (OP here), at least none that I remember. I don't even wear uncomfortable shoes.

It was my pinky toenail. I took off my boots and socks when I got home and noticed that it was hanging off. I didn't even know it was loose. I just pulled it gently and it came off. There was another nail underneath. Nothing hurts. Weird.

Has this ever happened to you?
