That does suck! When we tell our secretaries we are traveling, they ask where and genuinely tell us to have a great time!
Ours do too but they marked it unexcused. They mark anything w/o details of illness unexcused.

If I know in advance my kid won't be in, I might send a note in beforehand so I don't need to remember to call the attendance line.
