If your kids are already around 8 and haven't started playing one sport year round it doesn't matter since they probably aren't going to be star athletes. Many kids have been playing soccer and tennis since they were 4 around here all year long. There are some kids who enter sports late but unless your child is really athletic, you or your spouse were really athletic and can help your child develop, or your child is the fastest runner or unusually tall they aren't getting recruited for high school.

What about what your kids want, OP? They are individual, autonomous human beings with their own ideas and feelings, not a fashion or status accessory for you.

Right now my kids are in early elementary at a language immersion DC public charter school. We cannot afford private at this point but supplement with tutors in key subjects to provide some extra academic enrichment, given we see some gaps in what is provided at school. I think we may be able to afford private high school for each of them.

The kids are just now getting into sports and have tried basketball, swim team, soccer, and tennis. Assuming the kids are agnostic on which sport is their favorite (right now, if i were to ask my daughter she would say "trapeze"), is there any sport that would help them get a bit of an edge in private high school admissions? We will be engaging in sports anyway, to learn teamwork and stay healthy, but am wondering if there is any advantage, from a private high-school admissions standpoint, of focusing on one sport over another.

I am not set on "Big 3" but am just using this as a starting point. I have not fully investigated private schools yet, but would be looking for something that is not single sex, has advanced foreign language options, and that is possible to get to from Capitol Hill.

Any suggestions, most appreciated.
