I grew up receiving the silent treatment. It's emotional abuse. The excuse that you don't want to say something you'll regret is utter crapola.

Say you need some time to cool off before talking and go do so. Engage in civil pleasantries as required in the meantime and respond when spoken to or contacted via phone or text.

Also, if you need three days to cool off before you can speak, you have major anger issues and need to seek therapy.

Any person with decent self-esteem will stop giving a shit when someone gives them the silent treatment over time and will just disengage emotionally from the person. So if you are a person who gives the silent treatment to a spouse or child, you will reap what you sow.

A mature person would say, "I'm really upset about what you said this morning, and I need some time to cool off and think." An immature person just stops talking to you. I have no patience for that crap. It's not your job to drive over and give him a BJ so he won't be mad anymore.

Consider this a blessing and move on. He's obviously completely emotionally immature, and that will only get worse if you move in together/get married.

A few hours or an evening should suffice. But if he's trying to "punish" you while still not dealing with the issues at hand, you've got much bigger problems on your plate.

This hasn't ever happened to me. DH doesn't do the silent treatment.

I'm a DW, and I give DH the silent treatment when I'm pissed at him. Otherwise, I might say something I regret later. Need time to cool off.
