Too violent and too porny for minors. Fiancé and I watch, but even I feel uncomfortable at times.

17 is a lot closer to having babies than being a baby, so yes, when my kid is almost old enough to die at war, drink, smoke, sign an apartment lease, get married, and is packing up to leave for college, I will let them make their own TV choices.

If I haven't raised them well enough by then, it is too late to start.

Do you have HBO? Do you have amazon? At 17 the kid is watching GOT at home or at others houses. By elementary school they know how to operate remotes so make sure you have blockers on your channels. FX, MTV etc.

Would you allow your 17 year old to READ GoT?

At a pretty early age I was reading the fantasy cannon, as well as stuff like the Gor books (which got pretty repetitive and dull fairly quickly).

As a general principle, I think it's a bad idea to make a rule when

1. You know the kid won't follow it.
2. The kid knows the kid won't follow it.
3. The kid knows you know the kid won't follow it.
4. You know the kid knows you know the kid won't follow it.

A better idea: talking about things with your kids.

Both my two oldest kids were away at college by that age, so they could watch whatever they wanted. I might talk about disrespect towards women and inaccurate portrayals of sex, but that's it.

Yes, I would.

Most kids have plenty of opportunities to watch porn, even if not allowed. That doesn't mean that the parent has to officially "allow" it.

Of course a parent can ban anything. The question is, what does the banning get you?

I agree that there's much more to the show than light porn, but on a recent episode there was a prolonged and very explicit scene of two women engaged in oral sex. There was absolutely no legitimate reason that scene needed to be there. Call me a prude or old-fashioned, but that just does NOT seem to me to be acceptable viewing for a child under 18.

The show is heavy on gratuitous sex and violence. Also, sadism, as someone else mentioned. I'd let an older teen watch, with me as painful as it might be for both of us, and discuss the show. My mom was still trying to block certain TV and movies for me when I was 17. I saw them anyway and then hid it from her. I don't think you can control what a 17 year old watches but you can create opportunities for discussion.

Yes, and preferably together since many shows spark good discussions. I have no issues with the sex, but some of the violence/non-consensual sex is a bit disturbing. But again, discussion topic.
