Sorry about your rejection letter from Miami. It hurts at first but you'll see that in the long run, it's better this way. GL!

Admissions rates and selectivity are not the same thing. It is possible for a school to have high admission rate and still be quite selective. It just depends on the quality of their applicant pool. Some schools tend to get a large number of unqualified applicants, while others tend to only get qualified applicants.

I am amazed at how many people do not understand this.

I'm glad I don't have a daughter replying… That video is incredibly intimidating!according to someone we know who is a high school college advisor the school has changed dramatically over the last 10 years and has gotten increasingly harder to get into.

Agreed that ALL of the schools mention are difficult to get into (the last two included). To the original question, U of Miami does defer many students. Their issue is that they do not have dorm rooms for a large freshman class. They tend to defer, wait to see who is really and sincerely interested and then make a decision. DD was deferred until the Spring semester this past cycle. While the school was one of her top choices, she ultimately went elsewhere since she didn't want to wait until Spring to start. The school, however, is a good school.

Maybe they ramped up the number of foreign students?

My daughter had two good friends both who applied and one was rejected and one was deferred. This was a huge surprise, as both girls are excellent students, got around 2050-2100 on their SAT'S. My d also applied but regular decision however her friends decisions have me secretly a little unhinged about the schools my D applied to, U Miami being one of them. She has about a 3.8 and a 2070 on her SAT, 30 on ACT. Her first choice is UVA, followed by Miami, U Texas Austin and Wake Forest. She only applied to one true safety school and now I am thinking.....maybe that was a mistake. Are applications this year an unusually high number as they were in 2008? Just curious....their rejections were a big surprise.
