Thanks but this wasn't a viable option for me. I tried it and it got unwieldy (ie work travel agency booking travel for me under my work/maiden name when my ID has my married name.) Got pretty confusing which is why in my new job I'd like to just use my new last name alone.

PP here. That makes sense. I have always had my assistant book my work travel and she's on the ball. I can imagine it'd be frustrating if you didn't have someone competent and it was just one more thing to get messed up!

I use the second option. I got married in late grad school so all my academic work is under my maiden name, while all my post academic work is under my married name. Need both, but there is a clear line in the sand as to which I was using.

Unless you were very well known by Sally Jones and your maiden name (eg, professional reputation, Google results, etc) will help you get hired, in which case I would go with Sally Jones for the resume then Sally Jones Smith for the paperwork.

If you're not planning to use your maiden name going forward, why bother with this?

Because my past work (which is what makes up my resume) was done by me with my maiden name. So if my prospective employer did any googling or searched for me as Sally Smith they'd find nothing. I want my previous work as Sally Jones to show up when prospective employers search for it.

It's easy if you don't change your name.

Either list your full name with you maiden name as your middle name or don't include it at all. Definitely don't do the nee thing - it looks like NY times society pages stuff. And I don't really see the point of doing the parens. Either it's your name or it's not.

Updating my resume for the first time since changing my last name. How do I indicate this? I currently have it as my new name at the top with maiden name as "nee" (ie it says "Sally Smith (nee Jones)". But that feels so outdated. I actually kept my maiden name as an additional middle name, but I don't plan to use it professionally moving forward. Maybe Sally (Jones) Smith? Any other suggestions?
