I'm a good mom and went to great schools. have a prestigious job.. but everyone's drinking the KoolAid on play-based everything... you have to wonder when that bubble will burst. A sane approach is balance! A friend was a private preschool teacher in NYC and told me that while her school was strictly all play, most of the kids could read or were well on their way. Why? Well their well to do parents hired tutors or nannies or did academics evenings and wkds so you better believe they were learning to read before K.

Yes, but you can also go way too far with this....

How is this 'way too far'? it's preschool, not k-8. Preschoolers should be allowed to explore the natural world and enjoy being outside, not memorizing sight cards.

PP here - You have to judge for your own children. DCPS preschool has a nice balance of play and academics.

American early academics isn't working so well, imo.

We're AA. Our DD is older than preschool, but loves that her private school mandates plenty of outside time. If it is not below freezing or a lightening storm, they go out several times a day. Some days, it seems the teachers try to keep them outside all day. It took a little while for me to adjust to picking up a wet and muddy child from school, but I see the benefits. I wish this program had existed here when she was younger. I do wish the nifty rain suits featured in the article were on our recommended supplies list.

River Farm Cooperative in Alexandria is similar. They spend about 1/3 of their time outdoors, rain or shine, 1/3 on academics, and 1/3 on sports/field trips/library/etc.

Our preschool implemented outdoor classroom last year. Everyone loves it.
