We have stayed at a hotel when visiting my in-laws when DH's stepbrother and his family are also visiting--they just don't have room and it's better to have some space.

My parents own a house across the street from their house that we use when visiting--it's great!

We get a suite. The teenagers have their own room and can stay up. We have peace and restful sleep. We eat breakfast out at a diner and join the family around 11:00 AM. We not have it any other way.

We always put my 85 yo father up in a hotel when he visits. He'd be more than welcome to stay with us, but he's rather set in his ways and really just prefers the hotel. It's under 10 minutes from our home so it works out very well. I think I'm less stressed this way too.

I wish we could do this. My MIL has some of the oldest least comfortable mattresses ever. They must be 20 years old. DH says his mother would be horribly offended if we stayed anywhere but her house- so for now I'm stuck.

I must know more about this. So you stay there just every so often but they bought you a condo there?

My inlaws and my SIL (their daughter/DH's brother) live ten minutes from each other in FL. Technically they could each house us for 2-3 days but it never made anyone happy. We went down for Thanksgiving and spent $125/night on a condo at the beach from VRBO. It was fabulous.

LOVE staying in a hotel when we visit my ILs. There just isn't room for all of us at their house, plus MIL smokes like a chimney, and DS and I both have asthma.

I think it might have offended MIL at first, but then she felt relieved to not have to get the house "guest ready."

Do you spring for a suite or do you and DH just go to bed when the kids go to bed?

Hotels are amazing during visits. Love love love love it. The kids get better sleep, DH and I don't fight...so good.

Goodness yes. Thanksgiving was 14 people in a 1000-sq-ft house. We stayed at the nearby hotel, worked perfectly. Went back to hotel for naps and bedtime. I'm an introvert and it gave me a break from the family drama and madness.

Used to stay with BIL when visiting, but earlier this year there was some stupid drama when we stayed there and I am not inviting that again. When we went back, we just said, we're staying at the hotel. BIL wondered why but was fine. Good thing too as I got horrible food poisoning. H and DS spent the day at BIL's house while I recovered.

Saying that, my parents and ILs always stay with us here. Never an issue but then there is way less drama with fewer people. If the whole family was coming, some would definitely have to stay in a hotel. I'd probably go stay in a hotel.

We tried staying with DS and DIL a few times. It never ended well. They have dogs they allow everywhere and I have allergies. I spent a fair amount of time cleaning the guest room & bath just so I could wake up with no congestion. ( this was after allergy meds - btw)

Had a heart to heart with DS how it wasn't fair and from that point forward, we would only stay at a hotel when we visited.

The visits are much more pleasant and limited. And no more hard feelings.

Have you found this to be the case? Was your family offended initially do you think?
