OP here. Last night, during our quiet NYE at home, I decided to let DD watch Mean Girls with me. What a mistake. We got about 20 min. in and I had to turn it off - my DH was looking at me like, WTH? It's a very funny movie - for much older kids and adults. Not for 11 yr. olds. Or at least, not for my 11 yr. old.

Common Sense Media recommends age 10 for The Force Awakens!

10 is awfully old for The Force Awakens. I would six to seven and I am not very liberal with what movies I allow my kids to see.

This is kind of what I was thinking (I'm the OP). DD says "all" her friends have seen it and reference lines from the movie all the time. But from what I remember of it, it's very much high-school-ish humor, innuendo, etc. Very funny movie... just not sure I need to show my 11 yr. old quite yet. I guess I'll be the uncool mom a bit longer. Thanks for all the opinions.

I would say middle school is a good age.

Did you ask your daughter who "all" is?

When my kids were 10-12 and would use the "everyone" argument, I would always ask for specific names. Usually "everyone" meant 2-4 other kids, or several of the perceived popular kids. Not everyone and not all.

Maybe a compromise would be to youtube some of the funnier and more age appropriate scenes and let her watch those so she has a a bit to talk about or can get some of the references. I have a friend who did that with their kindergartner for the new Star Wars movie. He can talk about the characters and spaceships but hasn't seen the actual movie.

It doesn't force anything to show a movie. DD is 12. There is a girl in her grade who is 13 and is the most immature girl I've met as an adult. One of her close friends is almost 12 and one of the more mature girls. She can navigate her way around a city, would be capable of flying alone to a different country complete with a layover, can deal with disappointments or problems by solving them or asking for help, etc.

Physical age is not everything.

DD was 12. I wouldn't have minded at 11. Old navy had a shirt that says Good for you, Glen Coco, but DD didn't want it.

That age seems fine to me.

Yes, 11 is fine. Mine saw it at 10. I have to admit I love that movie.

My 11 yr. old daughter says that "all her friends" have seen this movie. I saw it a long time ago, when it first came out, but can't remember if it's appropriate for someone her age. Somehow, I don't think so, though if she were a little older I'm sure I wouldn't have a problem with it. Have any of your 11 yo girls seen it?
