This is BIL, SIL, niece and nephew.

I just saw a photo from Christmas 10 years ago when we drove 10 hours into the snow with a toddler. When we got there, this family would not have us over.
We had to visit with grandparent at separate times from them. I was livid, especially b/c if this was it was like when we did holidays with HIS side, what was the point?

Flash forward a decade and we are actually syncing up vacations, texting, making jokes about trendy things.

A big change was the loss of the previous generation (nostalgia, a degree of pot stirring?) and now that I have kids, I see that some of the boundaries were not just about control (and some were).

Seeing this woman hug my kids is something I never thought I'd see.

Anyone else have a new outlook? WHat changed?

I don't get it. They wouldn't even let you into their home? Why?

Just in the opposite direction. A close caring brother went batshit crazy when he hooked up with his borderline girlfriend. And now the cousins can't play together anymore. Your post gives me some hope.
