There (Manuel Antonio) right now. Absolutely no problem driving down Hwy 27 and 34 down to MA from San Jose. Roads were completely smooth all the way, if a little slow going. Will find out about La Fortuna tomorrow.

San Jose to Manuel Antonio was no problem, but Manuel Antonio to La Fortuna involved some bad roads, made worse by the lack of street signs and a GPS that couldn't figure out where we were -- but none of that should be a problem if you've got a local driver.

We had no issues from San Jose to Manuel Antonio

I am not prone to motion sickness, but I got extremely nauseated on the road to La Fortuna. So did my son.

We hired a driver for the drive from San Jose to MA and it wasn't too bumpy. It's just long (about 3 hours as I recall) but there was a lot of construction on the road when we were there a few years ago. Also, there are not many places to stop along the way. I recall only a few markets and road side stands once we were outside of San Jose. We did stop where they do the croc tours just to get out of the car for a bit and see some crocs.

Wow such different experiences. Well I'll hope for the best but prepare just in case (got my dramamine packed). It will just be us in a car with a driver so at least we'll have the air conditioning and can make stops.

I don't get car sick, so I can't speak directly to that. But we took a public bus from Manuel Antonio, and it was the worst ride of my life. The road sucked, but also the bus has no air conditioning, and it was a billion degrees, and there were smelly strangers pushed up against me. Terrible experience, and I'm a native NYer who thinks nothing of sweaty crowded subway cars.

We went to Costa Rica on a school bus tour last year - my kid was fine, but plenty of others were puking. Roads are not the best!

Our two kids both got car sick on the ride from Manuel Antonio to La Fortuna. If prone make sure you sit in the front seat.

Not a bad drive at all now that they put in the partial highway three years ago. I've done it pre and post and it's much easier now.

It's pretty bad, especially in a multi-passenger van. If you are prone to motion sickness, I would take Dramamine. We did the same drive and it's treacherous.
