I think it really depends on the school...my kids are at a "Big 3" (hate that term) and none of them ever wear those, but I see them all the time at the public school in where I work.

I love it when people ask these questions about private school kids only as if there's a huge difference between them and suburban public school kids. Obviously, there can be a money difference but most trends come from the lower income kids and move up.

A lot more stylish and many less expensive options. If you don't know what to look for, search for jewelry makers that were at Crafty Bastard. Cool clothes for girls can be found at Violet, Current plus Cusp and the fast fashion chains (H&M, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, Zara). Don't even bother with clothes for the straight sons.

Stereotyping much?

One child is at private (not big 3 but in the 5 schools most discussed on this board) and one at public and they say athletes at both wear them. Difference could be in the amount of athletes at a given school?

Eww, wouldn't want to mistakenly get something public school kids wear.

Yikes. Lily Pulitzer and Vineyard Vines are for basic suburban parents. Don't buy "brand name" jewelry from the mall. Go to Etsy for the jewelry. A lot more stylish and many less expensive options. I'm not a mom but am looking to buy cool gifts for my 16yo cousin (girl who goes to Holy Child) and 13yo cousin (boy at Landon). When I was at NCS (long time a go) there were certain items that were trends, and I know in the past few years there have been certain things that were "in" like Sillybandz (obviously totally 'out' now!!).

I've seen teen girls wearing these Lily & Laura bead bracelets: http://www.lilyandlaurabracelets.com/ and the ribbon hair ties: http://www.amazon.com/Ribbon-Hair-Ties-Neutral-Laurenz/dp/B00BVSA1AY

I know guys are into things like Under Armour hoodies... What are the teen girl and teen guy trends I might not know about?

Sometimes there were even small things that became fads, like a particular type of pen (remember 'gel pens' anyone??), notebook, lipgloss, coin purse... or I remember a certain year those mid-calf socks came back for teen boys.

I'm not looking for general gift ideas here, but rather the specific fads that are in at the DC area prep schools.
