I agree with the shoes. Too supportive, not supportive enough, changes step or alignment. Could be a number of things but usually boils down to the shoes and step.

I have suffered from shin splints as well and had some success with taping and icing. The main reason was my shoes. The area described isn't consistent with where my pain was but I'm not a doctor. Get a good cold wrap to help with the pain. Probably a sign of inflammation. Where I got my tape and cold wrap: http://kingbrand.com/Leg-Ice-Packs-and-wraps.php?REF=34PV18.316

Do you have flat feet? Read up on PTTD (posterior tibial tendon dysfunction).

I got them once from walking around in a new pair of sneakers; the shin splints were extremely painful! The orthopedist said that the shoes placed my heel lower than the rest of my foot and recommended that I use heel cups and ibuprofen temporarily and get new shoes. I did, and they cleared up.

Do you not have strong bones? What sort of shoes are you wearing? I'd be looking at those things.

I'm a runner and got shin splints on one shin years ago. Started yoga right after that, and haven't had them since.

right underneath the knee, not down along the shin bone itself? That doesn't sound like shin splints to me.

I sometimes get them after walking in certain shoes - clogs that I haven't worn in awhile and one or two heels where the angle is problematic for some reason.

One of my legs has been hurting under the knee. I finally saw my GP who thinks I have anterior shin splints. I am not a runner and in fact am not even a walker right now. I'm not even exercising right now.

Has anyone had shin splints without knowing why? I clearly need to work on stretching and getting in better shape...
