For men, I go practical - nice coffee, high quality black socks, a thermos mug that keeps your coffee hot for hours.

If he has some hobby and the equipment he uses for it is a couple decades old, you could replace it.

I love this idea but I can't find the one in the Wikipedia pic! That would be perfect. The ones on Amazon look a little cheap.
