I'm not sure why you think I'm outraged, pp. I'm not. I was just surprised to get something from school with the word Christmas on it...that's never happened before.
And I was struck by the concept for young kids. The ugly Christmas sweater concept is a throwback to the sweaters our moms and grandmothers wore in the 80s...and the ugly kitsch aspect evolved in the 90s. They don't make these sweaters for young kids, and it's not something they can fully appreciate. Just curious who came up with this for an elementary school? That's all. And curious if other elementary schools do this.
Are you one of those people who thinks that there is a war on Christmas?

Jimmy Fallon has brought back the fun in ugly Christmas sweaters.
It is a specific thing that really, really, really has zero to do with Christians and Jesus. They are silly, fun and about as secular as any part of the commercial cultural side of Christmas can be.
If you don't have one I would just have my kid make his own using a cheap Tshirt and a bunch of sparkly things from the craft store.

Ours isn't, but it's also a Focus School and the administration is very sensitive to any activities that might make the less privileged kids feel left out. Feeling like they need to buy a sweater they would only wear once definitely falls into that category.

The whole concept is weird when it comes to elementary aged kids. The "ugly" when it comes to adult Christmas sweaters is something most kids love- over the top, kitschy, ornate. To a kid it's just a sweater with stuff they love on it. Rudolph with a light up nose? Yes please! And don't call it ugly!

Which does it say?
Christmas sweaters are a thing. (Christmas ANYTHING is a thing.) Ugly sweaters are a thing too, so I assume that ugly Christmas sweaters are also a thing, although probably not for six-year-olds.
In any case, even if the principal's letter doesn't/didn't say Christmas, I think that everybody knows what "holiday" and "winter holiday" mean -- which is why I've always been amused by the outrage about "happy holidays".
