This happened to us and we're waiting out a lease that runs out in May so we're pulling back on our search right now and waiting out til inventory is better. We have considered new builds but none have really been to our needs. Extending the lease to a month to month rental would be most ideal for you so you stay ready to move when the time comes, but you buy yourself more time to house hunt for something you'll truly love.

Short term rental apt is the way to go. We actually loved the rental and want to go back!

Inventory is low. Took us 15 months to find a home. Rent in the meantime.

Thanks, wasn't really sure how to find a month to month rental when we aren't ready to move in immediately like so many seem to advertise.

This time of year, any landlord might be happy to give you a shorter-term lease just to bump their renewal into Spring/Summer. Sucks finding tenants in winter.

Try one of the Oakwood buildings in Arlington. They offer short term stays at monthly or weekly rates.

You have to accept, and budget for, a pretty expensive interim period. Any short-term rental you choose will be expensive, plus you will want to make a quick move when an interesting property comes on the market, and might take a hit on the rental contract.

It's part of moving, OP. It took more than a year for us to look for our "dream" (fixer-upper) house.

This is very smart and worth the premium cost for a month-to-month lease. The home sale contingency can really be a huge obstacle when trying to land that awesome deal with a motivated seller.

We're finally in contract on our house, and ready to move forward. Over the past 4 months, we found a handful of places we thought would be "the one" only to not be ready to make the offer, and lost out to other buyers. Now it seems inventory is low, but we don't have anything in front of us we have our hearts set on. The intention was to make the next place our long term, if not "forever" home. But we soon won't have a place to live, period. (Well, at least we have about 45 days or so.) Concerned about renting just in time for the spring market, only to want to be ready to buy something in June and still have 6 months left on a lease...or not find anything till Sept...etc...
