I adopted my cats from the Montgomery County Adoption Center: http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/adoption/cats.html
It was a good experience both times.
I also looked at the SPCA in Montgomery County. And, if you live near Olney, the Pet Value Store there seems to have pets for adoption regularly. (I know of one family in Olney that is looking to rehome an older kitten. Reply to this if you're interested.)
I suggest visiting multiple places.

PS We adopted one cat from them so that is why I am on their email list. I am not currently affiliated with them, though. We had a great experience with our one cat adoption, however, and we love, love, love her to pieces! =)

A lot of times vet clinics have animals for adoptions. Mine always has cat cages with kitties who need homes.

Not Montgomery County, but we adopted our cat from King Street Cats in Alexandria and really like them. A lot of the younger cats have been in foster care, so they have a good sense of their personalities.

Right now, Homeward Trails is full of cats (over 150) so you'd have a lot to choose from. And they are running a "deal" until Dec. 31st where you name your own fee, so, basically pay whatever you want.

I got a cat from Last Chance Animal Rescue in a Petsmart. I have had six cats now and the cat I rescued from Petsmart was the nicest cat I have ever owned. He was about 5 months old when I got him -- he'd been in the Petsmart for about six weeks. He wasn't especially cute and he always lost out to the younger kittens, but he was so friendly and calm.
If you get one from Petsmart, take your time. I kept checking out the cats occasionally over about 3-4 months. I knew that when I found the right one, I'd know. That sounds silly -- but it worked for me.

Subject: Best place to adopt a cat?
Seniors for Seniors in Rockville is great -- they do a lot of work placing senior cats with senior citizens, but have cats of all ages. We adopted our awesome adult cat from them about 18 months ago. The woman running it really knows the cats well and takes excellent care of them.

If you can adopt a pair, maybe an already bonded pair. They are harder to place. So are black cats. We adopted from Homeward Trails and highly recommend them. If you adopt from a foster situation you will be able to get a read on the cat's personality.

I live in Alexandria so don't know anything about MOCO but Petsmarts always seem to have young cats in need of homes.

I split from my ex and he seems to be unwilling to give me our two cats even though he "hates them". I'd like to adopt a youngish cat. Maybe not kitten, but not old. Has anyone had good experiences with local shelters or organizations in Montgomery County?
