I have neither for my 5 year old. Our health insurance plan BCBS includes basic dental. It's been sufficient.

My 2 year old failed the ped eye exam and needed to see an optometrist. Glad I had him on vision for that. No charge. Also, dental plans may have waiting period for procedures to be covered. Check into that before deciding, per PP's story about the broken front tooth.

STFU. Seriously. People learn by asking questions. You should try it sometime.

No. Wait until next year for dentist. Vision is done at the Peds.

Does this REALLY warrant an OMG? Jeez.

Yes, OP is not very bright and shouldn't have had a kid.

We asked my father-in-law, a dentist, how early he thought my daughter might need to start going to the dentist. I signed her up that year. (when she was turning 3.) We didn't do vision insurance until last year (6yo), when family members' kids started needing glasses.

For me, it wouldn't have been the end of the world to have to pay for a dental visit or glasses before we had insurance. And if you're saving 3 years of dental premiums and 5 years of vision premiums, that savings could pay for it.

I added two week old DD to our medical, dental and vision policies. However with our company plans, once your at a family rate the cost doesn't change if you have one child or six.

Yup, it is sad that some people cannot take care of their kids.

Dental, yes. Vision, not necessary unless the child has vision issues early on.

We just put our three-year-old on our dental.

You do not need it. Our "regular" fed BC/BS insurance covers a yearly visit for eye dr and 2x a year for the dentist.

Now

A cautionary tale - When my dd was 18 months old she tripped and fell on her face breaking her front tooth. They did X-rays and, thank goodness, she didn't need a root canal ($$$). So very happy we had signed her up for dental insurance.

Federal open season is now and I'm wondering if my DD will need this kind of insurance in the next year. Do kids go to the dentist before age 2? Eye dr?
