I like to get thoughtful, meaningful gifts but I've learned over the years that even though she can afford it herself, mil prefers practical stuff, like a suitcase, for her present. I'd tell your husband to ask her.

Agree with PP - same gift but different color, or something. I was going to get scarves with texts from famous books (Jane Eyre, Alice in Wonderland, etc). You can find them at Uncommon Goods.

I take malicious pleasure in thwarting my own mother's jealous temperament. MIL could not care less, truly, and is overall a lovely and tolerant person. My mother is the opposite, but contains herself when company is present. So they'll get "equal" gifts, which will drive my mother crazy!

There are really pretty art inspired scarves at the National Gallery Gift shop. Get them each one that suits them. Same but different.

My mom likes sentimental gifts and my mil- no idea, we aren't close and DH isn't much help.

We got them canvas prints and a pic coffee table book for their bdays this year and we have the kids make an ornament every year.

We are getting fil a wallet and bottle of scotch.

No ideas on what to get, but I would still get them the same thing, and make them open it at the same time and make a big deal about it.

Both of them will be over for Christmas morning. I'm at a loss as to what to get them to its "even". My mil is jealous and judgy and my mom could care less but I don't want to hurt either of their feelings. We used to get them the same thing since we were never all together but we can't do that this year. Also they are both extremely hard to shop for. Need some ideas...
