Giving this thread a bump... Looks like there are some transparency issues around getting information on conviction statistics - article in the Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/woman-seeking-data-on-conviction-rates-is-told-request-is-costly/2015/12/12/9323f6b0-a010-11e5-a3c5-c77f2cc5a43c_story.html

I've generally been supportive of Chief Lanier, I'm not sure if anything on her end has changed, though the increase in crime seems to coincide with Mayor Bowser coming into office... That had me wondering if any Bowser policy changes were contributing to the uptick in crime.

What I didn't realize until recently was that all adult felonies in DC are prosecuted by the US Attorneys office... And someone suggested the other day that they were dropping the ball after Holder left, resulting in violent felons ending up back on the streets in DC...

I tried looking for prosecution/conviction stats to compare to the MPD crime and arrest stats to try and better understand the full picture but am still struggling with that.

Does anyone have any good data or insights to what is going on?

" what is going on" is that a few years ago Issa and the Republican house along with the NRA and some R wing lawyers overturned the handgun ban in DC and the mandatory prison term of 5 years that used to accompany being found in possession of one within the borders of DC.

It has taken a few years , but now the gun trade is booming and with it, violent crime.

The US Atty along with every mayor in America opposed this law change and also supports the ban on assault weapons, so don't blame the cops. Thankless job if you asked me.

I'm skeptical of your suggestion of how many DC crimes were prevented by gun-toting civilians... Have any hard data to support it?

??? what . That is not my point at all. what suggestion?

To Repeat:

" what is going on" is that a few years ago Issa and the Republican house along with the NRA and some R wing lawyers overturned the handgun ban in DC ( bad idea) and the mandatory prison term of 5 years that used to accompany being found in possession of one within the borders of DC ( really bad idea)

It has taken a few years , but now the gun trade is booming and with it, violent crime. ( the result of two really bad ideas)

It was higher in the past & certainly not limited to her tenure.

But MPD desperately needs monitoring devices like body cams that cannot be turned off or erased by the officers.

MPD still has major corruption problems.

Every police department in the nation needs body cams and dash cams. Not only does it curb the potential for corruption, it also protects cops and aids in prosecutions, because it ends the he-said/she-said and provides evidence from the field of what really happened when the cops encountered the suspects.

Breaking news: DC cops are getting body cams. http://wjla.com/news/local/dc-police-to-be-outfitted-with-body-cameras-after-proposal-passes

Yes, it does have those programs. The US Attorney's Office in DC is unique in that it prosecutes local crimes (most misdemeanors and felonies). I'm sure they have a website with some relevant data. At least as of a few years ago, which is all that I know, they were staffed with the most talented and dedicated attorneys I've ever met.

Can you contact your councilmember's office? I've never seen prosecution statistics. But that would be interesting. Does DC have a lot of diversion programs? Drug court? Mental health court? Those types of things?
