Our neighborhood school is on the list with dangerous levels. I don't have a test result for DC's classroom building at private but it is in a really new construction so it has been tested and I seriously doubt that it was falsified just so the new building could open. And we don't have a basement at home. But both my parents had their basements tested within the past two years and they are safe.

But hey, if you want to prove a point with your own kid's brain and mind, I'm not about to stop you.

The link is between radon and LUNG cancer. I don't know why you're mentioning brains and minds, here.

Yes, because lung cancer never metastasizes to brains.

But since lung cancer is ALWAYS lung cancer (by definition), it seems to me that it would be more reasonable to worry about one's child's LUNGS.

What specifically seems VERY shady to you, here? That there are some rooms in MCPS schools with high radon levels? That MCPS did radon testing but didn't tell you the results? What?

Radon is not an instant poison. The risk comes from exposure over time. The risk to a student from spending 5 hours a day in a classroom for 180 days for one year is not much. The risk to a teacher is higher, since the teacher could be in the same classroom for several years. This is not to minimize the dangers of radon. It's to say that it's not grounds for panic, if you are a parent of a student.

Thanks for posting.

Another reason to avoid our neighborhood school.

Ok then, please post the radon level in your private school. Or in your basement. Do you know?

They've never tested the public schools? That article had an attached document of all of the schools' test results over time. Maybe what you mean is that they have not remediated all the schools. It is worth asking if their policy is to do (expensive) remediation for every area over 4, or to retest over time before doing remediation, because levels do fluctuate over time.

I saw this on the news last night and was thinking about the implications not only for the students, but for the teachers who work in those buildings year after year. Scary.
