I don't mind if my kids head into the woods to play. In fact I encourage it! I used to explore and play in the woods all the time when I was young too. When I let the dog out on his own I put him on a stake and tether leash. Though about getting an invisible fence but never have.
My dog is a hound and would run in a second if we didn't have a fence. My kids are 3 and 5 - do you really let your kids that young wander into the woods unattended?

We each put a different thing in each yard. One huge swingset, one pool, one basketball court, etc. It makes all our properties feel so much bigger.
