St. Matthias has canceled its Spanish Immersion program this year after the Spanish instructor resigned. I was very unhappy with this decision and the way it was handled (they waited until tuition for the fall was due before letting us know) and I pulled my DD out of their kindergarten program. She had been doing really great in their Spanish program.

My child has 1 year completed at MIDS and I would say the school is majority african descent, roughly 95%, with maybe 3% European descent, 1% asian, 1% other.

In regards to tuition, they offer discounts for military depents, and I'm sure they would provide information on any other discounts and resources they know of to lessen the overall costs.

My child enjoys this school from the classmates to the administration and being that it is a small school, its like family with how close everyone is, which makes it a very welcoming school especially for children who are a bit shy.

My child started here in the 1st grade with little previous Spanish language in a school setting and picked up to the pace in no time. We talk about this school and their dedication to the immersion program with anyone, whether they asked or not . Our friends and families are very impressed with our child's progress and success here and can't wait for our other children to come of age for this school.

I definitely recommend attending an open house and if not just call and ask about dropping by.

Does the tuition need to be paid before school commences? I noticed that on the school's website and was a bit shocked. Other schools have more flexible arrangements.

Also, how diverse is the school?

Tuition has several payment options. 9 month or 10 month with ($2500) deposit and contract.

Love the families that attend and that is is in my community so we don't have to trek across the bridge or into DC for a good elementary non-religious based private school option. Cons would be that they don't have don't have the fancy facility like more expensive schools but that is fine with us because we aren't willing to pay for that. They have everything they need to provide a top notch education and the graduates go on to do very well at big name private schools in the area. We have been very pleased with the curriculum and how our child loves learning and going to school.

Just getting the word out that Saint Matthias in Lanham is going to a two-way Spanish/English Immersion model for K and PreK next year. My daughter is in PreK there. The PreK is full right now without the special language program, so I assume there will be a wait list for next year, too. The program is in a network out of Boston College.
