I'm impressed you've never needed a mattress pad -- my kid routinely spills enormous glasses of water all over his bed.
I hope your child is feeling better!
Yeah, we double up on the waterproofing by using a vinyl pad that is basically a giant bag that goes around the whole mattress and zips, and then a softer padded, but still waterproof one over the vinyl bag thing.

The cleaner needs to reach every spot to get the smell out. Let it sit for a few hours and then aim a fan at it to dry it the rest of the way. After that, put a waterproof mattress cover on it. I don't know how old your kid is, but I've never met a parent that did not use a waterproof mattress cover on their kids' beds. My kids' mattresses would not be safe without one.
This. All of this

We googled and tried to find some enzyme based cleaners but when we couldn't, I dabbed it as much as I could with paper towels and left it to dry. Ugh still smells today. Should I still pursue the enzyme cleaners? Will they work a few days after the fact?
