I don't see many newer Craftsman-style homes with "no walls at all" and the stairs in the middle. At least not in our neighborhood, where the new homes are usually at least $1.8 million. What areas are you describing? Ashburn?

Yes, they are dated and tacky and consume too much of the 2nd floor square footage. We looked at some but all I could think of was how much I would prefer to have an additional bathroom instead.

They also cause noise to carry between the floors more easily, which is annoying when you have kids. My SIL has one and her boys are always throwing stuff down from upstairs. I think it's unsafe.

We have a two story foyer but not great room. I like it. It's not an obnoxiously big foyer but it's nice. Need a new chandeliers though. Previous owners put a weird modern looking thing in that was probably great looking in the 1990s.

A nice great room can be awesome. I hate the ones that are skinny or narrow, though. It should be roughly as wide as it is tall to not look weird.
