My MIL makes such a big deal about doing their traditions as-is, note-perfect, every year that I rebel like a sullen teen. She yips about NEEDING to be in PJs on Christmas morning (like, who doesn't) that I come down fully dressed. Childish, I know, but when she tries to orchestrate and control every little thing, I can't stand it.

We are the opposite. DH's family is huge, but so freaking quiet. Any talking is reminiscing about the most embarrassing moment - you guessed it - starring DH. It is awful. They fall back into their old abusive roles. I don't know why we do it. Anyway, you are not alone, OP.

That's my plan! Though normally I try to hold off on the drinking until the apps start. So apps go out at noon so I can uncork the wine!

Yup. DH grew up spending the holidays with loads of cousins and thinks the crowded house and chaos is festive. I grew up with maybe one uncle coming over for a few hours, so dream of a quite holiday with just DH.

Yup. Wish we could just split up and go to our own families for the holidays. It's joyless

I used to love the holidays and nowadays I don't because I dread going over there.
Anyone else?
