There are three seats available on the Falls Church City Council, and three seats on the school board. Sam Mabry and Johanna Barry (council candidates), along with Mark Kaye, Alison Kutchma and Becky Smerdon (school board candidates) are the FACTS coalition (Fairness, Accountability, and some other buzzwords.) They do not support any new growth (smart or otherwise), families who live in apartments/condos, replacing our leaking, crowded 50+ year old high school, or finding a solution to our elementary crowding other than stopping people from moving in. They are being helped by Ira Kaylin, former council member and a regular donor this summer ($550 or more) to John Faust, the Fairfax planning supervisor who is blocking the Mount Daniel renovation.

As part of their attack strategy, this group has suspiciously timed the release of letters written in 2012 on behalf of Michael Gardener, who was ultimately convicted of molesting several young girls in the community. Many of the letter writers were found to be city leaders (ugh), one of whom, Phil Duncan, is up for re-election to Council.

Still with me? This is where things really go off the rails:

Not content with merely calling out Phil on his choices, the FACTS crew piled on. They captured the FCCPS parents email list and are using that to spam every family in the city with screeds somehow linking Phil to council candidate Letty Hardi and school board candidate Erin Gill, both of whom favor smart, thoughtful growth as a way to fund city services and schools. (The logic behind the most recent attacks is fuzzy -- either they're taking too much money from developers or they're taking too much money from small donations. It changes by the day.) FACTS are also behind the "We Support the Girls" signs, which are apparently only about Gardener's young victims and not about other girls who were attacked by another teenager last year.

School board candidates Jake Radcliff, Justin Castillo and Kieran Sharpe are keeping their heads down. As is council candidate Dave Tartar.

So basically Tuesday's election is about whether to endorse these dirty politics and people who have promised to stop any potential for revenue, or to choose candidates who have focused on the issues and have expressed concrete ideas on how to get where we need to go.

Good summary!!

Yes - nailed it.

Now for my question ... how do I explain the "We Support The Girls" signs to my kindergartener and first grader? While we've talked about "bad touch" a few times to date, I myself don't understand why people are putting signs in their yards. What about the younger girls from fall / summer 2014 who we want to support and may not be comfortable with front yard signs. The entire situation is a mess.

My sweet 7 year old was asking today of girls were better than boys. Because of the signs. She's old enough, so I told her the truth (the gist of it). And why, even though I believe and support the girls, why I don't think signs are the best idea (i.e. If something bad happened to you, would you want to be reminded of it a 100 times a day as you walk around? Or think about it and deal with it when it suits you? ). For us, it was a good conversation to have and good reinforcement about what to do if someone tries to touch you, even if they are a trusted grown-up. But yeah, crazy. Also how weird must it be if you are a different kid who was abused and the perp didn't get arrested and put in jail, seeing such an outpouring for these particular victims (who actually did get justice at least).

My spirits were lifted during Halloween. Talking to so many parents and families and being reminded that everyone I know in real life is a normal, kind, decent person. They have quirks for sure, but we all love living here. I'm one of many families who sold one house in FC and moved to another. There are tons like us - I don't know how common that is elsewhere - maybe it is - but I think it speaks volumes that even with the insane prices and taxes , we sold/bought all within FCC.

Thank you for this! We are a relatively new family to FCC and I've been trying to figure out where to get information about the candidates. I was also wondering how the heck the FACTS people got my email. I've tried to unsubscribe but no such luck (of course).

Shocking that they would urge that a pedophile be quickly released back into the community.

I find the letter writing to be completely repugnant. It shows a lack of character and judgement.

I don't really care who wins the election. The property taxes in Falls Church City are not going to come in line with other jurisdictions anytime soon. An election won't make a difference. The campaign letter I received from Phil Duncan said that he hoped to hold the current rate at $1.30. Seriously, there is nothing that special about FCC that makes that kind of property tax rate worth it.

Can someone explain who the candidates represent? The news press article was so poorly writtn, I'm lost.

You have essentially 2 gro u ps? One wants to keep building up the city, the other doesn't? Then which group is using the Gardner thing as political smearing?

I'm disgusted by all of it, including those using the tragedy for political gain.

+1000. The crew behind the inflammatory blogs has no shame and I think exposing the victim, who's now 14, is such a bad move even though the family says it's totally OK.

I am not familiar with those cases. Do those relate to Gardner? Did city leaders write support letters for the perpetrator?

And, of course, the disgusting behavior that started it -- the child molestation if multiple girls -- was committed by a city leader and the husband of a former city mayor. Horrible story.

Those poor girls.

This may have already been brought up but I didn't see it. I cannot believe that FC leaders (elected and that nut behind the news press) wrote letters in support of a convicted child molester. That is too much for me to comprehend. Add this to its roots in racism and segregation and my impression of that city cannot go any lower.
