You need at least an Executive level income in order to have a child.

We lived on about 40K/year when DC1 was born.

We had about $90K when we had our first, but we'd bought a house we could afford on that single income because we knew one of us would stay home in the early years, so we didn't have childcare expenses.

HHI of $275k with 1 child. Things aren't tight, we buy what we want, when we want. However, we do still use coupons and buy used toys that show little wear to save $$.
The costs of Daycare affected how much we were saving per month, otherwise, we don't feel any financial burden.
Commute is normal, house is 900k.

Depends on where you want to live.
I'm a single parent who makes about $100K and it was tight during the daycare years, in part because I work in DC and bought in N. Arl to cut my commute. $2,500 mortgage plus $1,300/mo daycare made things tight. Once my child was in elementary, it got a bit easier. We use aftercare ($327/mo) and camps ($400/wk x 12) but activities got more expensive. There's also the clothing issue, since kids often grow fast enough that you replace their entire wardrobe twice a year.

We bought a house with 80k hhi in DC a couple years ago. Not the best part of town, but it gave us a shot to lottery into a good school and live comfortably within our means. We have awesome commutes. I think finding an affordable place to live is the biggest issue. Once you settle that it's easier. Are you willing to live in a less desirable part of DC? I didn't find suburbs to be much more affordable.

People have children on a broad range of incomes. It depends very much on the lifestyle you wish to have. House size, commute length, school quality are all big factors.
