Better a dead rat than a live one.

We had a bird build it's nest in the vent.

Mine looks like this

No way anything can get in.

Is your vent on the roof ?

I was just going to say something similar.

Yuck!

If it was an animal--mouse, squirrel, etc. it may not be in the venting hose but got the insulation around it around it. Animals can definitely crawl into vents: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsSy6geEKq8

You can make or buy a cover for outside vents: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2k5vvrw0Nk

OP here. No water heater in that room - it is in the basement. The laundry room is about the size of a big closet. All that is in there is the washer and dryer. I hoped it might have been water in the pipes this morning since the dishwasher was running, but nothing was running a few minutes ago.

Not an animal...probably normal. Is your water heater in the same room? The sound is more likely coming from that. Ours does this regularly, I thought we had a mouse or squirrel in there.
